Overcome fear forever!

By Jim Connolly
If fear is getting in the way of your happiness or success and you want to overcome it for ever - this article will show you how!

I a recent article at www.jimconnolly.com I mentioned a call I received from a well-known BBC radio presenter who wanted some assistance. During his call, he explained that he had just accepted an outstanding career opportunity - to present his very own afternoon program. What was his problem? Fear! This professional Newsreader, who speaks to millions of people every week, was in his own words; “absolutely terrified” at the prospect of moving to the new programme. I suggested we meet and get this problem sorted out.

After a chat with me over some BBC coffee, he was able to transfer that fear into excitement and was really looking forward to this new chapter in his exciting career.

There is a valuable lesson here!
Even though this chap was “absolutely terrified” about this new stage in his career, he knew it was a great opportunity and so he took it - and THEN focused on removing the barrier! He did not allow the fear to get in his way of what he wanted.

The secret to overcoming fear!
The secret to overcoming fear, is to learn that EVERYONE experiences fear - not just you! As one of my former boxing trainers told me;
‘A hero and a coward both feel scared when they are confronted with a fearful situation. What makes them a coward or a hero is simply how they react to what they fear’.

The people who bravely progress through their lives feel fear just the same as those who elect to take ‘the cheap route’. As soon as they are aware of their fear, they do something instantly to deal with it! They use a strategy to kill the fear in its tracks… Like this.

The best strategy for overcoming fear I have ever known
The best way to overcome fear is to (literally) eliminate it! How? The way you FEEL is determined or governed by what you FOCUS on. In order to feel scared, for example, you need to focus on something that’s frightening - AND THEN make that image in your mind as big and bright as possible - AND THEN play it over and over again until you feel frightened (or ill.)

To overcome feeling scared or afraid, simply TAKE CONTROL of what you focus on!

For example: If you are in a lot of debt and it’s frightening or worrying you
STOP focusing on the debt or on people knocking at your door demanding payment!
START focusing on how to get out of debt and how to come out of it stronger and better than ever before! Focus on what you WANT to happen! Focus on putting a list together of people who can help you. Focus on taking control of the situation - it will INSTANTLY stop you feeling scared and START you feeling strong and in control!

Conclusion
When you decide to take control of your focus, you will be able to permanently eliminate fear, worry and anxiety from your life. The next time you notice yourself feeling afraid or vulnerable - simply focus on the perfect solution for you - not the problem.

Remember, you tend to get from life what you expect; so start expecting the very best and improve your life in every area! (Please forward this post to anyone you think might find it useful)

Jim, I love your new blog. Just wish I had more time to read everything that you have to offer. I was introduced to a great new networking site today: http://www.ecademy.com/ and the good news is that it is UK based. I’ve signed up and have also joined the new Authors Club. The person who started the Authors Club is the one who told me about this site and we both feel it is by far the most business-oriented site we’ve found. It’s something Lauren might want to check out as well.

    Hi Linda,

Good to hear from you. I am in the process of finishing your latest book and its BRILLIANT!

eCademy is very well-known here in the UK. My experience is that people either love it or hate it. I have no strong feelings about it either way to be honest.

The weather here in the UK is not ‘quite’ as warm as you are enjoying in Arizona, but it’s warm and dry for a change.

Thanks for your feedback Linda and the eCademy.com suggestion.

Does anyone have any eCademy feedback they would like to share?

    Hi Jim,

Focusing on the outcome is wonderful advise. We are often willing to walk over hot coals if the payoff is big enough.

I have also discovered that it is important for me to acknowledge rather than deny my fear. Then I can identify if the motive for the choices that I am making is to avoid my fear or to further my goal.

After all my fear can’t hurt me (it’s just uncomfortable). It’s the choices I may make to avoid or resist my fear that can be counter productive or even destructive.

Courage is not the absence of fear but action in the face of fear.

    Thanks,

    Lauren

    Hi Lauren,

Thanks for that great quote at the end of your comment. It’s one of my favourites!

@Lauren “After all my fear can’t hurt me …” That’s such an excellent point! And thank you for sharing the great quote.

Jim, another very thought-provoking post, thank you!

I love your final quote, it reminds me of this:

Decide what kind of world you want to live in and act accordingly ~ Richard L Franklin

I think the problem with fear is that it is no longer seen as simply a means of survival, as a good thing. Where fear once made us run when we needed to escape danger (being pursued by a sabre-toothed tiger, perhaps), it now often makes us run from any possible danger. We see it as a warning not to do something rather than a test of our abilities.

I think most fear is based on the possibility of future failure and failure too is understimated as a tool for progress.

Must write a post about this too … you truly are inspirational, am loving your blog!

    :o)

    Hello Dianne,

Thank you for sharing the Richard L Franklin quote - I really like it!

There certainly is a need for fear, but our fear must serve us and help us to avoid REAL harm.

Thanks again Dianne. Can you please post us the name and URL of your blog; as I’m sure my readers would like a look - I know I would!

    hi Jim

one of my fave quotes about fear which i posted on twitter.com this morning is by Ruby Dee:
‘Lord make me so uncomfortable that i do the very thing that i fear.’

@Diane ‘I think most fear is based on the possibility of future failure…’ - totally agree, and lets not forget the fear of SUCCESS!, which, combined with fear of failure, USED to be a major stumbling block for me. as Marianne Williamson said (and made famous by Nelson Mandela): ‘our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.’

And lastly F.E.A.R. is an acronym for False Evidence Appearing Real!! because the thing we fear the most rarely happens

Gosh! i could go on and on here!

as ever, love the blogs Jim! a bit challenged by keeping up with them in terms of time.
